IMC Rating

Ratings & Courses

The Instrument Meteorological Conditions (IMC) Rating legally allows pilots to fly in reduced visibility and increased cloud conditions within Britain. However it should only be used to get out of bad weather and not to get into bad weather. The course helps pilots improve their flying skills, weather and instrument appreciation.

During the course you will complete various instrument approaches at Shoreham, Lydd, Southend and Manston, in the south east of England, as well as general air work away from the airfield. You will be tested on your approaches, instrument flying and limited panel flying (simulated gyro failure). The ground exam (as with the PPL) is multi choice (4 choices), and the pass mark is 72%.

Flying Time IFR and EFIS Equipped Aircraft Fleet

We are able to offer the IMC on both our standard instrument fit aircraft, such as our full IFR DA40, DA42, PA28 and Piper Aztec aircraft or on our Garmin G1000™ EFIS equipped aircraft, such as our DA40 Diamond Stars and DA42 Diamond Twin Star.

An IMC Rating (Instrument Meteorological Conditions) is only valid in the UK, but enables you to fly in weather conditions considerably worse than those allowed with a basic PPL.

You'll also get the opportunity to try out some GPS navigation approaches, Shoreham Airport being one of only a few airports in the south east of England to support GPS approaches.

To add this rating to your licence you need to complete a minimum of:
